wtf?
08 Apr 2007 11:52
OK, Im stumped!
So I've posted a few questions lately and now I'm stumped for good.
I thought I was having a timing problem as to why my 1 and 4 cylinders were not firing, so i took the top end appart and double checked the timing and it looked fine, the cams were right on and 1 and 4 pistons were at TDC.
Now I'm trying to start it but nothing! plenty of gas and spark. I guess checking compression would be my next step.?.?.?
I've read alot of post about ignition timing, Is this something I can try? thanx guys and happy easter!

I think I remember something about you having had this engine apart recently. Am I correct? If you would keep posting in whatever thread you previously did we would have the benefit of knowing what you've already been through.
But to start in the beginning. If you're having troubles with 1&4 look to your coils and points, if you bike is so equipped. An easy first step is to swap the 2/3 coil for the 1/4 coil and see if the problem moves. Is it possible that you have the 1/4 coil firing when it should be the 2/3 coil and versa visa?

I've done all that, I'm getting plenty of spark and fuel just not firing! like it's not timed, or it's flodded, It was running but only on 2 and 3 and then it would fire on all 4 then it would quit and only fire on 1 and 4, it's crazy, bow it checked the timing and everything looks good but it's not starting at all.

Is it possible that in "doing all that" you've cross wired the coils? Do you have a wiring diagram? Are you sure that the 1/4 coil is the one that's firing when either 1 or 4 is at top dead center?

are you talking about the actual plug wires or coil possitive and negative wires? because I am possitive that the plug wires are right now do the coil wires (black and red) have specific coils to go to? I thought they are just constant power to the coils.

Make sure your plug wires are going to the right plugs first. On my 1978 1000 it goes: Left coil (if you are sitting on the bike) 1+4, right coil 2+3. If you have them wrong like 1+2 3+4 it wont run. Cylanders are 1,2,3,4 left to right.

Hey customkzft,
I'm speaking about the primary wires (the little ones). If your bike is a 96 I'm sure it has electronic ignition. But still each coil gets a specific signal to fire when it's time is right. It would be relatively easy to hook the coils up in reverse and have the 2/3 coil fire when the 1/4 coil is supposed to. You would still see spark at all the plugs but you would never be able to tell that the spark was happening at the wrong time for every cylinder.
It's just something to check. Actually I would expect that with the coil primaries swapped it'd be backfiring through both the carbs and the exhaust. In any case, it wouldn't run at all and that's where you are!
