I am going to guess and say u are running a stock clutch, I would put some stiffer springs in it. It sounds like your clutch springs are going bad. I would try replacen the springs first.

I always wondered, does stiffer clutch springs = harder to pull clutch lever?

Ron

A little harder but when you change also the wire (recommended, I didn´t, pushed the bike a few hundred meters...) there´s not much difference compared to old and little stiffer wire+stock springs.

Z1000R ´83...Slightly modified...

I think I'm all set with that... Clutch is hard enough on my hands in traffic now :)

No amount of adjusting is going to fix your problem. You are going to need new clutch plates. Stick with the stock springs or buy a clutch kit with the springs. Either way your clutch is simply worn out.

Yea, the adjustment really has absolutely nothing to do with clutch slipping unless the cable is way too tight with no free play at all. You can tell this real easy by jiggling your clutch lever. Is there play in the cable? If so the clutch is as locked up as it's ever going to be and in need of work. Guys love those stiff springs ect, but they are absolutely no benefit unless you're running a 200hp engine. Stock or even a pretty fast hopped up KZ work fine with stock plates and springs. Back in the late 70s when the KZ1000 was beginning to be overtaken by the Honda CBX, GS1000, XS11 ect, the magazines raved about the KZs great clutch where you could drag race all day, where those other POS bikes clutch would start going south after a few runs. On top of stiff springs being a pain in the wrist, they are hard on all the mechanicals like the cable, clutch release mechanism and so on. None of this helps in any way your slipping situation, but if you do replace the springs and plates staying stock would be the best bet.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
