Can I change pistons without removing engine? was created by FloridaBiker
The bike is a '82 KZ1100 shaft.
Is it necessary to remove the engine to replace the cylinders and pistons?

The engine doesn't need to be out of the bike to remove/replace the cylinders and pistons, but you would have more "working room" with it out.

Like R4 said. I always wait to put the top end on after the engina is in the frame on a rebuild to make it lighter to put the block in the frame.

With the top end removed I've never needed help getting it out or back in. Don't know what to tell you.

I about busted a gut removing the bottom half of the engine on my project bike. Of course, I wasn't doing it right, and was trying to get it out without removing the airbox. I kept getting hung up, then losing my strength, then slipping on the floor (covered in oil), then catching on the wire harness (shoulda taken that off too). If I did it the right way, it wouldn't have been too bad.

my buddy would lay the frame on its side over the engine...slip the bolts in then stand it up...i thought he was crazy.
