wanting to die while idleing

so i was out on my bike this morning taking it for its maiden voyage. it was running great. went to a friends house for a bit. when i went to leave. the bike was running really wierd. it was very jerky and inconsistent when i gave it gas and then would want to die while idleing. eventually the jerkyness stopped but it still wouldn't idle properly. this is a 1980 kz550 ltd. any one have any thoughts on what this could be.

are you running a fuel filter, if so check for rust in the tank or fine particles that work there way through the filter, this could semi plug or restrict the pilot jets and cause this condition

i am getting ready to check on that right now. i have the rest of the afternoon to work on it so hopefully all goes well. thanks for the advice
