jug interchangeability was created by dustinleavitt
well it turns out my little 93 police bikes all clapped out, with as low as 38 psi of compression in one of the cylinders.

I found a jug and pistons in good condition for a 1978 kz1000, and I am wondering if It would work?

I know its a big gap in model years but these things didn't seem to change much mechanically through the production run.

look for one that says 998cc, not 1015, and you will have a winner.

Put a 1075 kit in it. We did some for the CHP and some local police depts. They loved them.

yep the one for sale was a 1015 which won't work.

which leaves me wondering what my chances are of being able to just take this baby apart, run a bead honer though it and buy new rings? I am asking because I am financially strapped with school and can't afford pistons and the whole bit right now.

Your cylinders are more than likely out of round, so new rings and honing won't fix it.

You can get 1100 blocks on eBay pretty cheap, then watch for some 1105 pistons or a kit. The 1105 is pretty much the first overbore size for the 1100.

I got a set of like new Wiseco pistons and a 1100 block off eBay for less than $100 shipped, rings cost less than $150 and boring will cost me another $100 (a friend is a motorcycle machinist), so I'll have $350 plus the cost of a gasket set in it.

I'm a professional cheapskate (and still looking for cams cheap) :D

what is strange is this guy claims its out of a 1978 but that it is stamped as a 998, doesnt this mean that it will work? or is there some other sort of variant?

or is he just plain wrong on the date?

Sounds wrong on the date.

The hole for the cam chain tensioner will be round on the 'J' block and rectangular on the kz900/1000 block.

Difference in J and KZ. APE .

re: used part. Measure before spending time to install.

If you're not going to measure, at least check each cylinder to see that the ring end gap is reasonable and that the ring fits all around it's circumference.
