kz550 mods?

i just purchased a 1980 kz550 ltd, this bike runs great so there is no problem there. i was just wondering if anyone had any advice for do performance mods or enhancements to it. Or the fact that it runs well, i should just leave it be. let me know of any ideas. i don't want to do heavy mods to it. just simple ones like a jet kit or at the most a different exhaust system or what not. we shall see. thanks

Your engine is an air pump. If you increase the amount of air it can draw in and blow out, you must increase the amount of fuel it can mix with this air to the ratio constant. If you don't increase airflow, adding a jet kit will decrease your bike's performance, not increase it. As far as adding an aftermarket exhaust, most don't significantly add any power although most are somewhat lighter than the stock system. The main benefit is increased noise to give you the impression you are going faster. Honestly, enjoy your 550 as they are peppy bikes and if you want more power, buy a bike that has fundamentally more power; like a modern sportbike. Or a KZ with larger displacement.

pipe, air filters, rejet the carbs. you will be going a bit faster if its done right
if you want some bigger gains go with the wiseco 615 kit with the first mods mentioned

Sounds like you want to tinker. If so, you should try to get a smaller, non running bike, dirt cheap at a garage sale or something. It'll be simpler and easier to learn the basics on. And it won't matter much if you blow it up.
