I've been using this stuff called never dull. Comes in a can, looks like a cotton wad soaked in something. Works good on flat surfaces at least.. Not sure you could use it on an engine where you couldnt really get at everything with your fingers. Anyway, I got it at advanced auto parts. Worked great on my left side cover over that chain etc.
