checked my shims, is it bad if i cant fit a .076 mm guage beween 7 out of 8?
or do i need a lower guage?

.076=3 thou of an inch.
If You can't fit THAT gauge in there,then You're on the tight side.
I'm not sure about the J motor,and I'm running 410 cams in My motor,with about 6-7 thou clearance(just reshimmed the other day as a matter of fact and found one was pretty tight,explaining the popping I was getting at the end of the season).
With the stock cams,I was setting them at about 4 thou(77 KZ1000A-1).

Others will chime in on this...
