Heavier engine oil?

What would be the side effects of using a thicker oil in my engine, like 20w? I would like to change the oil today if I get chance or should I just stick to 10w. I use mineral oil so I am not going on a long debate, cool?

this is my 1000 I am talking about and sometimes I go across the interstatelike 15 miles one way, but its getting warmer and I find myself stuck in stop and go traffic, plus I think I hit like 90mph on the highway sometimes or I do a little drag take offs with it!

FWIW, the weather here in So Calif is very similar to what you have out there in Florida (minus the hurricanes of course :pinch:), and I run Castrol GTX 20w50 in my bike year-round.
Even in hot weather I run my bike pretty hard when the chance presents itself, and rush-hour traffic doesn't help cooling either. But I figure that with the oil cooler and 20w50 oil, I'm giving the bike at least somewhat of a fighting chance as far as cooling and lubrication are concerned. ;)

Hey Matthew, I'd stay 10w40 for this change. If you really want you can do 20w50 in the summer. That's what I used to do when I rode all winter. 20W is too thick if we get any more cold weather. Maybe we wont though? HA.:P

Well I only did it in the 1000. Recently I have been riding it here in Denver RRRR and it got a little angry with me for stopping too much, so I decided to change the oil. I still have my 650 with the 10w just in case of the cold Ron!

Bad on my part kzwolfsr.
I have absolutely no clue why I said Florida instead of Denver (whish is clearly visible in your sigline).
Maybe it was the palm trees in your avatar that I saw, and assumption took over from there. :pinch:

Like Ron said, sticking with the 10w30 or 10w40 for your bikes is a better idea, since I really doubt that in your neck o' the woods that you'll see nearly as high of temps (sometimes 100+) as we see here in So Calif during the summer.
