I just got the bike, and I don't know much history about it, but I'm thinking the engine is all stock.

I would suggest going over the bike making sure everything is working right, a tune up, maybe a carb clean if necessary and a K&N filter.

All the above, making sure to check (replace) point gap and timing, could be retarded which could cause slow response
