KZ900 Engine Stamped 1015cc

The engine on my '76 KZ900 is stamped 1015cc. I assume this means it is from a KZ1000. Is this correct?

The lower right front of the cylinder block has the cc embossed on it. That's the cc of the cylinder block.

The engine number (on the upper right rear by the oil filler cap) tells you what the cases are from. Z1E-xxxxx is from a Z1 or KZ900. KZT00xE-xxxxxx would be from a KZ1000

Yes...Someone must have rebuilt the top of the engine,or( like what Jeff was getting at)...the whole engine has been replaced with a "1015cc" (1000) engine.
The 900 engine will be stamped with "903cc"

So look at it THIS way...You just inherited 112 cc's!!:woohoo:  B)

Okay, now for the not-so-good news. Having having mis-matched engine parts will negatively affect the bikes value, particularly if you are into restoration. If you are interested in resoration AND you still have the original 900 cases in the bike, it is possible to drop a set of 900 jugs and pistons back into the original cases and recover a bit of history. If you have KZ1000 cases (check you VIN), then you are SOL.

Thanks for the info everyone. The case is marked KZT00A3.... so I guess the engine is a complete 1000cc. I don't understand why someone would take out the original 900cc and replace it with a 1000cc engine, unless they were trying to gain more cc. What would the benifit be from this.? Was the original engine weak or something? What are the differences between a kz900 frame and a kz1000 frame? -Thanks, Matt

the 77-78 kz1000s had the stamped steel footpeg and exhuast brackets,1000 ltd frame had the z1 style brackets.lots of these bikes got motors swapped out over years ,sometimes it was because the motor was bad sometimes people just wanted more motor, and sometimes they were just packrats like wireman and just grabbed what was sitting in the corner and threw it together;)
