need smooth running help!!!!!!!
13 Mar 2007 18:56
hello all..... i just baught '81 kz1000ltd..... bike has been sitting since last fall, so im told.... anyways i just got the bike running, it runs like its only running on 3 cylinders, i did check for spark ( the old fashioned way, grounding plug to head), spark appears to look a lil bit weak, i know they run like this from time to time, as my fathers did, but i really dont feel like changing plugs everytime i wanna ride it... alson the 2 inboard plugs ( #2 & #3) appear to get a lil bit of oil on them I'll assume rings but thats not the question.... 1st i just want to get it running smooth, and no the wires are not mixed up... although i did try switching #1 & 2 wires just to see what would happen made a very slight differance but definately not a good one did the same with 3 & 4 no change, all 4 appear to fire ( all four header tubes get hot..... bike just runs extremely rough
any ideas?
thanks in advance

I'd check the points too. Worn or poorly adjusted points = weak spark. Also check the timing while you're in there. A cracked spark plug wire could give you a weak spark or intermittant spark as well. Although come to think of it your bike is a lot newer than mine it probably doesnt even have points! I'd check the wires, and check the voltage at the coils. Wiredgeorge has a thing about rewiring the coils with a relay to make sure they are getting all the voltage they need. If none of that helps it wouldnt hurt to look at your carbs. I find mine need to be cleaned every season no matter how careful I am when I put it away.

Speaking as a friendly KZR Moderator.
It's always a good idea to read the Rules (at the top of the page), if you had you would have seen the following:
"DON'T CROSS-POST
Cross-posting is when you post the same message multiple times in various threads or forums. We only need to see it once guys."
Cross posting is considered bad form on most message boards.
I'm going to lock this one now, and probably delete it later.
