KZ1100 - Andrews Cams - No timing marks??
11 Mar 2007 07:54
1982 KZ1100 shaft.
I started to check my valve clearances, and the only marks I can find on the camshaft sprockets are:
ANDREWS EXH
and
ANDREWS INT
Does anyone know anything about these cams, or how to check if the cam timing is correct?

It is an adaptor sprocket and they made them with no marks.

I am comfortable with the tools.
I don't know any history on this engine.
A sharp bike mechanic told me he thinks it has a big bore kit and that the Andrews cams are probably more pure race than street.
I hope not.
Anyway, since I don't know where to time the cams (no marks or instructions that I am aware of) am I in the realm of trial and error?

I can find no other marks except:
* 1 tiny dot on each cam sprocket. It could be construed as a timing mark, but referenced to what?
*2 At the left side at the end of both cams are 4 indexed marks at 90 degree separation.
*3 On the right side at the end of both cams are square notches about 3/16"
Drawings attached. (I got poor picture quality when I tried to take a digital closeup)

The number should be stamped on the end of the cam and have an X in it if they are andrews. Like 2X 3X etc.

There is definitely no other number stamped on the end of the cams.
Could it be the 3L and 5R I found on the side of the cams?
The exhaust cam has a worm drive gear that is not in use, between the sprocket and #3 exhaust lobe. Could that be for a tachometer on some other model?
Also there is no double stripe marking on the cam, like the factory 1100 cams.
Could it be a Andrews sprocket and some other cam?
Any ideas appreciated.

If it doesn't have the X number, then they are not Andrews. Only the sprockets are.

Do they have the little notches on one end like your showing in your diagram? If so they are stock z1/kz1000 cams. If you could measure the lift you would know for sure.
