engine stand designs, need images
07 Mar 2007 12:27
I am going to weld up an engine stand, one that allows me to work on the engine while standing or sitting on a stool. Recently, I saw someone post pictures of a stand holding only the rear engine mounts, one that could rotate the engine around upside down. Any neat home built stands w/ pictures out there that someone might post to give me design ideas? I'm tired of flopping it around on the table.
1977 KZ 650 B1, I own two of them. Working on one custom rebuild, one daily rider. Used to have a third. Two 1978 KZ 650 C2 models, sold both. KZ owner since 1987.

Hey Mountain:
I'm thinking about the same thing. Someone on one of the posts in my Project thread mentioned that it's possible to fab up an adapter that allows one to mount a 650 engine to a standard automotive engine stand like this $40 model from Harbor Freight:
www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=32915
Thinking that some sort of angle iron fabricated piece should do it. I'm going to stop by my local welder's shop with some pics of the bikes engine mounts and the engine stand to get his opinion once I get back into town.

Thanks for the pic, fatkow.
If it's not asking too much, can you post a close-up of the area where the engine meets the stand? That's be a TREMENDOUS help. ;

Right on, Fatcow, you were the post I couldn't find from not too long ago. You're the one with the beer fridge blast cabinet. Cool, man. I love the innovative home made approach.
Also, Lansing MI man, thanks on the Harbor Freight link. That price would be very hard to beat. I'll troll local craigs list for a bit first. Correct duty at 750lbs. Also, check Ebay, there is a decent low miles project bike near you up for bid, when I saw bid was at $152. Did not look like anything was missing, just dissassembled. I think it is a '77 or '78 KZ 650 B model. This might really be a great addition to your arsenal. I'd buy it in a heart beat if it weren't far from me. I'll try to post a better link to get you there.

I have this stand from K&L Supply. It's a little pricey, but it is specifically made for metric engines.
I LOVE the stand. It is awesome!

I'm amazed that the engine will hang there from just the rear bolts.. pretty cool.
