oil cooler fittings?
28 Feb 2007 07:33
so after searching didn't find the answer so its time to just ask.
on my oil cooler it has these pressed on clamps around the hoses, if i cut these clamps open peel away the clamp will i have a nice fitting that some new hose can attach too as i want to go with a bigger cooler.

and here is the new cooler,
so as you can see im hoping to just cut off old hoses us the fittings attach some new hose and have a bigger cooler for when the snow melts.

Is it running that hot to warrant a larger cooler? You don't want a too-efficient cooler.

well it gets really hot here on the vineyard
and it obviously was not as hot in england where me and the bike came from,
the motor is heavily bored out which hurts the cooling and i thought it would be prudent to increase the cooling ability,
also i beleave that the oil isn't pumped round the cooler continuously there is a thermal valve that opens when engine gets hot but i may be wrong.

I'd invest in an oil temperature gauge to see what it's actually reading, so you don't over-cool the oil. If oil is the only form of cooling, you gotta know.

I found you some fittings...maybe. They're made for Suzukis but you could probalbe e-mail the company to get some specs to see if they'll work on your engine. They use AN fittings since most racing organizations frown upon hose clamped oil lines.

finding a nice inline oil temp gauge is proving not a easy find lol ill keep looking or just use the wifes turkey temp gauge for now lol.
what should oil temp be at just curious.
and am i wrong that a bored out motor runs hotter.
and i really feel the stock 3 row cooler is totally inadequate for my set up,
then my original question can i cut off the clamped retainer around hose and pull off the hose and get 2 nice fittings to use

Might consider replacing existing hoses with new hoses and affixing to cooler with regular ss hose clamps. Works for me with Lockhart style cooler.

The place in the motor the oil should be the hottest is in the head. Measuring the oil in the pan(imersed) is where I'd want it.
Oil temps in the 200-240 range should be OK, depending on where it's read it from. Too hot isn't good, and too cool isn't either. Using a gauge to see that it's warmed up before getting on the gas hard, will make your engine happy.

Kano? Did you hijack a bus to steal that oil cooler? Bwhahahaha - It sometimes gets warm down here in the Texas Hill Country but I have removed all oil coolers from all my bikes. In cooler weather, the oil never sufficiently warms. If you want to use an oil cooler, go to jpcycles.com and look at the nice Harley oil coolers WITH bypass valves. When the oil is cold, the oil doesn't go through the cooler. Only when warm. As far as the fittings, cut the hoses off, there are metal barbs beneath that you fit the hoses onto and then clamp.
