hard welding header?
26 Feb 2007 11:15
I'm planning to make my own header and muffler and I would hard solder the header on the pipes (solder meltingpoint approx 670 celsius). Should this do fine???

solder? I think you might have to weld this, solder will fall apart after the first bump you hit

I dont think it would hold up or stick very well. if you cant have it welded, a braze might be the next thing to look at

670C is about 1300F you could almost braze with that and get a much stronger joint. you really want to be about 1500F to braze. any non-structural joint i do on my bikes i braze, 1- cause i like the smell of my flux coated brazing rods and 2- it sure looks purdy.

Well...I know it's harder than it looks....and I'm just cobbling up a collector. Wire feed flux-core is what I'm using, 'cause thats all I got!! Welds are ugly in spots, but sound.

You hit the nail Wireman! after a while I was thinking of making them from copperplate. I do have all tools for making a header and "muffler" using copper and best! it does not rust:woohoo:
