oil cooler thermostat? was created by hardr0ck68
Any of you guys who run an oil cooler use a thermostat or shut off valve?
I would think that when its cold out you would want to let the old girl warm up before you start chilling the oil?
Any input or thought on this topic from the engine gods?

My take on this is if you use the right oil, it will work for colder temp, as well as hotter temps. Don't run the bike hard till it's good and warmed up, and don't run the bike hard when it's real hot outside. I'm working on installing a oil temp gauge somewhere, so I can see what it's reading. I'm working on a mechanical gauge, as it will show constant temps, and I don't want to mess with the electircal ones(that's just another wire on my bike).
There are in-line thermostats, but thermostats tend to stick closed more than open(at least from my experience they have).
Here's what I'm thinking:
Thinking of installing the cathode tube in the back of the oil pan here. There are side plugs under both side covers(one is seen in that pic above). Those are for checking oil pressure, and are a good place for constant oil flow, but I wouldn't want anything sticking out on the sides. I could always weld a fitting onto the oil pan somewhere.
This is where I'll be mounting the gauge.
#4 in the picture above is a hex oil pan passage plug the goes right to the relief valve, #16. This spot would be ideal, seeing on how I have 6 feet of cathode tubing that's gotta go somewhere. This is the only downside to a mechanical gauge.
What do you think?
