exhaust pipe turns red was created by usguns
I need some help with a 82 kz750 csr M1 It was purchased about a month ago. The license plates are from 1991 so that was probably the last time it ran. I was trying get it to run to see if the engine would even work. The first time I tried it the engine fired up with alot of kick starting and 1/2 can of ether. The motor ran and seemed to run o'k above 3000 rmp. I was pretty happy the thing ran and did some maintance, ie changed oil, etc. The next night I started it again and after about 2 minutes it seem to be getting very hot. I looked at the front left exhaust pipe and it was turning red, the front right looked ok. I shut the bike off and now looking for help.

Thanks

Mike

seems like she is very lean on that cylinder
i would look at your jetting first
plus, a good carb cleaning and valve lash setting is probally in order if she has not been run since 91.
you should never need ether on a well tuned bike.
the old girl just needs some attention then the love affair begins.
good luck, keep us posted and we all love PICTURES!

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

check the rubber boot that mounts the carb to the head. If it is cracked it wil let alot more air into the cumbustion chamber...causing it to run lean.

You could possably melt a piston running it very lean... so watch yourself.

1977 kz650 c1

bought it because I was told it would never run again...I like to prove people wrong.

I am going to try and clean the carbs this week. I did check the connections between the carbs and the heads and they are o'k. When I took of the carbs gas just poured out of them so I wonder if the floats are stuck.

well you do have to drain the carbs before taking them off - because they stay full of gas (in the float bowls only hopefully) once you start the bike up.

if your pipe is red hot it is too rich!!

float level or the choke/enrichner is leaking too much fuel to your problem cylinder.

check for fuel level first and the fluid should be at the float bowl mating surface (+or- 2 mm)

My first step was to take apart the carbs. Found many problems, like missing parts, striped bolts, and very dirty. One thing I am going to put a good inline filter in before I hook up the carborators and try and start it again. Thanks for all the help. Regards
