Transmission Woes \"chunk chunk chunk\"

Hi folks. I have a KZ1000 police bike. Under moderate to heavy acceleration, the transmission is slipping. It doesn't pop out of gear, but it "chunks" as the cogs slip partially out of the gear and back in again.

I took it into a shop, and the guy "tightened it up", and it started working great. Now it is slipping again. Question is, how do I fix this? Anyone know how I can "tighten it up" to stop it from slipping?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's not the clutch, because it is a harsh chunk or series of pops when it slips--as if the dogs on the gears are coming out of the recesses and shifting to the next slot. And yeah, I agree, it must be tearing parts up when it does that...right now I ride the bike pretty gently so it doesn't pop.

The mechanic probably took off one of the covers, and he might have tightened a clutch nut or something. Problem is, I don't know exactly what he did. Looking for ideas as to what that might have been, so I can do whatever he did. Any ideas?

Good idea about the chain. Perhaps badly kinked and "tightened it up" may have referred to slack in the chain. :)

my kz1000 developed a "chunk, chunk"....it was a sticky link in the chain. a little lube fixed it right up. good luck. :)

If an o-ring type chain, when it reaches the point of needing outside lubing to avoid kinking IMO it's then time for replacement. By this time the "permanent" internal lube is mostly gone and the chain is pretty well shot.

Well, folks, I went ahead and tightened up the chain. Turns out it was a ways out of adjustment, 2" of play or so. Tightened that up to 1.25", and problem solved!!

Thanks again for your help! :)
