Replacing valve cover gasket
21 Feb 2007 15:09
My valve cover gasket is leaking , i've bought a new gasket from the kaw garage . The gasket has sealer type material placed all over it . Is it necessary to use any black rtv when installing oem gasket ??

If you clean the mating surfaces of any old gasket material, then no sealer is needed. This goes for pretty much any gasket on our KZs.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

As a matter of fact, I even go further and apply a thin layer of anti-sieze on the gasket. Then it comes off in one piece with no scraping later on. (I don't reuse the gasket, I just do it because i hate scraping.) The key is that the surfaces have to be absolutely clean and smooth then they won't leak. I usually use a tiny dab of sealant only on the cam end-caps.
