however a welded crank is a must if you are launching with a 2 step, slider clutch and a slick tire. that is what really hits the crank.
I payed 75.00 to get mine welded up here in the quad cities. tough part is splitting the cases. the money and effort is better spent on bigger valves better carbs or updating the lighting/charging system.
I did mine but it is a matter of what you want to spend and how much you like to work on the engine. while you are there a better camchain is advised and clearance the cases for bigger bore pistons do a competition trans cutting procedure,etc... once it is split the choices begin to arise

im not sure if there is a hp cutoff point where it becomes a definate must, but if there was id say its well below 130-140 hp!like trippivot said its more of a matter of the bike hooking up hard and twisting the crank than anything else.if you dont hammer it really hard on a regular basis its probably overkill, but if you are letting some air out of your back tire and running at the track or "sidestepping" the clutch:evil: it would be a cheap insurance policy and would be a good excuse to check the rest of your bottem end so you are covered for whatever you throw at it.and yes a timing chain is a good idea;)I wouldn´t worry about crank welding. 1075 Wiseco + upgrading carbs gives you max 20rwhp increase and what I´ve heard/read welding becomes necessary after 130-140hp. I´d also like to hear if someone has had problem on crankshaft ´cause I got 1109cc, Mikuni flatslides, ported intake etc...
