thank you, sir!
the information you layed out is VERY helpful.
been ridin' kaw's for 15 years, though am new to this site and am pleasantly surprised about the wealth of kaw info here...
in particular, coming home a day later to find much more info about my bike than i'd expected.
again, thank you.

just to clarify:
if i have a 1980 kz1000 ltd and it has a k denomination on the title, it's a j motor?

A "j" motor will not fit in a 1980 frame.

Got a camera?

Here is a 1980 engine. Roy

Here is another way to tell what you have (titles can sometimes change through the years...for example, if you have a 'J' motor, and a 'K' bike, then it can only be a 1981 (or 1982) year model...but it could have been manufactured in 1980...and enough title changes over the years and viola!...the manuf. date becomes the model date). HOWEVER, kneel down, face the bike and look on the lower left hand corner of the cylinder block...there will be an inset embossed area that says either '.998 L' or '1015 cc'. 998 = 'J'

And to make matters even more confusing,the J,K,and M model bikes made in 1981 and 1982 all used the 998 "j" engine. However, the J model bike with the J engine produced 102 hp,while the K and M bikes only had 92 hp.Cams were different in the J engine J bike.That ought to get u real confused.bj

thanks, guys.
i think i do recall the previous owner (my bro in law)saying it was a 80 motor in a 81 body.
i'm going to investigate further with the details you've all shared.
let you know.
