Hello, I need help in getting out part of the valve shim tool that broke off and went down into the gap or channel of the cam chain(beside the intake sprocket). Heard it clink when it hit bottom. I already opened the oil pan and it isn't there. What would be the best and easiest way to get it out. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Get an automotive magnet (swivel magnet on an aluminum rod...sold at autoparts stores) and a good flashlight and take your time and hope for the best...if, not then you start disassembling your motor from the top down until you can fish it out.:(

You could try rotating the motor by hand (wrench on the points end of the crank) and hope it fell on the crank. If you do it be VERY carefull and if you feel it lock up back it off and you have found your chunk.

prevention comes with experience. a shop towel in the camchain galley is invaluable.

patience patience patience

the magnet is the tool of choice

shaking it upsidedown is difficult and messy but if you have a friend willing to help you turn the bike over your piece will shake loose eventually

Yep, get a shop magnet. That thing saved my butt a couple times. Luckily, the items that fell in were metalic, and I was able to retrieve them with the magnet.

I really wouldn't turn the motor over with that piece in there. If it didn't come out in the pan and if you can't find it with a magnet, pull the motor and turn it upside down.

I had a set of Andrews cams that were improperly drilled one time. A pice of the sprocket boss broke off. I noticed it when I did the first valve adjustment after the motor rebuild. Same deal as you, pulled the pan and it wasn't in there. I pulled the motor, turned it upside down and the piece fell right out.
