help with my kz750 tiwn
30 Jan 2007 10:07
im about to start building a rat bike, and im using a kawasaki kz750B motor. i have the entire motor, wireharness, carbs. the guy i got the motor from says its fine, and apears to be so. i have ok machanic skills (rebuilt a few briggs motors when i was younger and such) but none in terms of bigger motorcycle engines and frankly the electrical part scares me.
i would like to get the motor running well enough for regular use. i was wondering if you had any tips or pointers. i have also heard to use an electronic ignition upgrade kit. this company called boyer-brandsen ( www.boyerbransden.com/html/kawasaki.html ) has a good one but they only supply for the 4 cylender model. i emailed the company and said it might be able to be converted but they dont have any instructions to do this. do you have any sugestions about the kit or about the use of the motor entirely? what should i do? im in college and have some cash to burn but not much. your advise is much apreciated.

Keep the motor and use it as spare parts for a running bike which you can pick up for less than a Grand.
You'll learn a bunch more keeping you're new bike up and running than you will trying to take an engine to a motorcycle.

ummm steell, hes asking for you bud:P (the resident twin expert)
as far as an electronic ignition, you can use the one that comes stock on a kz440 or one from a later model 750 twin(82-83), not too sure about the aftermarket systems, newtronic (sp?) used to make them but I heard that they were taken over by another company

put the engine on and run it, nothing wrong with points, its an ignition system that can be repaired without spending a ton, if it goes wrong you only have to do the points and condenser,if the electronic goes bad there are bucks to spend, I have a 79 twin, it runs good and has 125K miles, plenty of power, I am doing another engine for it but not because the one on it needs anything but because I have another engine and all the parts to do it, also I have built a lot engines before(mostley car)the fun of a cycle is riding it, I love mine but I also have others to ride if I do something to one that takes it off the road for a while, and if you haven't done a cycle engine before it will be a while before your riding, another thing, it took me over a year to get all the parts for my twin, you won't find them "in stock"

Buy a coplete bike they are cheap .. that way you will have the stuff your not thinking of right now and a title ,, Use yours as a back up or parts .. Start looking on Ebay , I am sure you will find a complete bike for less than a 1000.00 ,,
