I don't have a clue about shimming a transmission, but you should be able to tell if the forks are bent by looking at the wear patterns.

Looking at the engine specs in your sig, Does that motor put out some decent (~130) hp?

It should next summer. It sat in my barn for 22 yaers and I revived it this summer. It lacked torque.I have it all apart now and have found some issues.Soft spings in clutch pack I'd say, loose springs in clutch basket.piston rings lost sprind (good clearances but bad blowby ,failed leakdown test).2 bent valves (over reved and week valve springs)

I have not seen shift forks bend. The problem with the shift forks is that they are paddle (flat) shaped on their ends and these flat parts wear. They just get too thin. Isn't there a spec in the factory shop manual for the thickness? Also, I think some of the "go fast" places sell new and beefed up shift forks. Last, I haven't a clue as to what "shimming the tranny" is. Never heard of this.

i shimmed a tranny gear once because it used to slip outta second gear. the pawls on the gear faces were worn so i filed them flat with a diamond file and shimmed the gear a bit tighter on the shaft. is your problem slipping out of gear here??? steve

The shift shaft also commonly gets bent and is easy to check but usually other problems exist at the same time.

The fork ends widths measure ok.I had a couple of times this summer when I could not get it to shift up into neutral. When I put the new trany in I did not re shim it so I just want to make shure everything is right, while I have it apart.I found an old manual that says there is another shim size available if the gears bind. The stock shims are 1.6mm new ones are 1.2mm. Book says to check for bent forks but dosnt say how.
