Of course the lobes are going to be facing away from the buckets because at TDC on cylinder one you will need compression to run. Arrow on your exhaust cam should line up to the front top surface of your head, intake cam arrow should line up with the top rear surface of your head. Start counting camchain links at 1 the first pin from the arrow, count 36 pins on your camchain and #36 should be on your other arrow.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

still having a problem understanding this valve timing.pointed ends of ext and int lobes facing each other, or facing away from each other on number 1 cyl at tdc. what do you refer to as "the buckets"?

The buckets are right below each cam lobe. The valve clearance is measured between the buckets and the cam lobes.

I'm not sure of the position of the lobes during setting up of the cam timing. You will be looking at the timing marks on the cam gears. The exhaust gear's mark lining up with the head surface to the front, and the intake gear's mark lining up with the head surface to the rear.
