crank woble? was created by martijn
It's a kz1000 engine/crank with only modification a 1200 big bore.
My engine is making at idle up to approx 1600 rpm a sort of rattle....When I installed it the rods where straight, in line and no excessive play on it's rods. So I wondered if it was knocking, got a look at the ignition. Then I noticed that the crank was actually moving from the left to the right (axial) for approx 1mm:S
I checked the books and as far I can see I did install the rings specified according to the parts list. I also thought that the 5th bearing should narrow the (axial) side play. There is still a larger washer on my bench, approx 2 inch and 1mm thin. Could this be an extra used shim? I also have dismantled a kz400....I wonder

i think you are referring to shaft 'end' play?
if you are then you have some sort of issue with the installtion of the crankshaft NOT the rods or rings. not sure what you had left over...LOL NOT a good sign!
Again if it is moving end to end, meaning right to left, left to right you have a THRUST shim issue. Thats a critical tolerence. Of course if the crank is moving sideways it could be the rods stopping it from moving even further. I think I would call Falicon or Paul Gast and see what the say. Another thing it might be? The crank itself is NOT indexed! Go to falicons web site and I think i remember he explains all the differences of indexing compaired to straightening. Short article and to the point. I feel for ya man. Sounds to me your going to be pulling it back out, and back apart. Hope you didn't paint the frame!

of course thats all assumeing you had the crank out? If you just installed a pistons kit ONLY and the bike never made the noise before, maybe that washer is a shim for the crank that goes on the inside of one of the covers? Sounds curious?

mount a dail indicator on the case and point on the crank, use a big screwdriver and work the crank back and forth, that will tell you how much thrust end play you have, you can then check the book to see if it too much end play

Indeed shaft play,.
It's a z1000 A1 engine. It has been out of it's cases. I checked it for bended rods, connecting rod play, small ends and bearing races. They all seemed to be fine. I'll check falicons site and check whether the shim/spacer should be installed at the rotor side.
I has approx 1.5mm side play....

As I read the side play is determined by the "oilseal" located behind the rotor which has different sizes and not by a bearing??
