crankcase breather situation
12 Jan 2007 09:29
hi, on my 77 kz1000 ltd i bought a 1 peice rectangaler chrome air cleaner box, the problem is with the old plastic stock one it had a breather hose going to my crankcase breather outlet. i was going to buy a small chrome crankcase filter off ebay, but i realized that it is 2 inches tall and would not fit because the new air cleaner is pretty close to the outlet for the breather tube. i measured and from the top of the crankcase breather outlet is only 1 1/4 inches from the new air cleaner. i bought the chrome air cleaner a few months back and cant remember the name of it, but i was just curious if anyone else ran into this same situation and could possibly help out, thanks

Sure.
Any decent auto parts store should have a selection of neoprene rubber hose elbows:
Measure the vent nipple on your breather housing - 1/2" or so, take your new breather filter along, and match it up to what's available.
With the elbow, you can point the breather filter in any direction that doesn't interfere with the airbox.

just put a piece of clear rubber hose on there and run it up under seat somewhere to keep the water out of it;)

I did similar... I bought some clear hose and just heated it (not enough to melt!) to bend it gently to the airbox...just put a piece of clear rubber hose on there and run it up under seat somewhere to keep the water out of it;)

I just installed a threaded APE cover on mine tonight. Can I use a hose/filter set up or do I need a catch can with the low profile cover??
Thanks
BTW, is it only OK to use the non-vented type if your starter hole is vented instead??
Well, the web page actually answered both of my questions in one sentence:
"Plain for applications where motor is vented from starter hole, Or drilled and tapped for fitting and breather filter." Nevermind...
