What would you think of tapping the holes then filling them with stainless steel socket head cap screws?

Are you talking about holes in the sides of the end?In the chrome ? Or in the ends as you would look from behind and see? If in the sides maybe some kind of tip to cover?

Here's another idea. Install threaded inserts of the type used to make attachment points in panels. The ones I use on truck control panels are aluminum but other materials are available. Then thread ¼" stainless steel socket head capscrews into them.

I bought a Suzuki once that had that done to it ,, I cut off Carrage bolts and used the heads to fill the holes then I tac welded them into place it worked out and after a spray of black heat paint didnt look to bad either ,, Just an idea :)

It did not on mine ,,,the metal is thin there so I ran a low heat on my Mig Welder:)
