missing gears
04 Jan 2007 08:14
Hi
I know knothing about bikes!!!
I have a problem.
When I'm riding, if I take it steady, accelerate gently in all gears, and change up early, then I get all my gears. However, If I accellerate hard I seem to come out of gear and have to change up or down to get back into gear.
Any ideas what this could be?
My clutch lever is very stiff also.

Fox...list Your bike model and year in Your signature,Bud.
This way We'll all know what bike You're talking about without having to always ask.
It could be a lot of things, but if Your clutch-cable feels too tight(stiff),then that should be looked into first,as it could be the cause.
Anyway...more details would really help.

Sometimes my bikes do the same thing. The transmission shifting-forks wear over time. I think you might find that one or two gears have this problem more than others. This is possibly due to hard use.
Of course there are other things like a goofed up clutch, but you didn't mention anything that would point at that...

Yep, sometimes those extra "neutrals" can really spoil your day. Mine will do it between 4th & 5th if I'm being lazy during an upshift

Sure it looks OK now, but wait until I really make it pretty, with some chrome and paint and some new tires and grips and the wiring. Don't forget the gearing, and the LED's and, and, and....

The clutch cable had a tight bend in it - the way it was routed to look neater! I re-routed the cable and adjusted it and it now gets all gears great. A totally different bike!
Fantastic!!

I changed to a set of Euro bars on my kz550 and now the clutch cable is a few inches too long. It is much more tight and grabby because it bows out too far. I only rode it across town to put it into storage like this but it definately needs a shorter clutch cable to get things back the way they were.

just find a different route that takes up the slack(without sharp bends) It worked fine for me when I had clubmans on my 650.
