Hi

I am not technical at all! I have just bought a 1983 550cc Spectre.

My problem is noise. I have bought this bike and it has a 4 into 1 Motad Stainless steel Exhaust fitted and it sounds extremely loud. Too load for 7am in my neighbourhood. Is there anything I can do to make this a little more neigbour friendly, without spending much money?

Check to see that you have a baffle in place. If you don't have a baffle you are gonna need to get one. I'm not very familiar with Motad exhausts I think they are only sold in Europe. If the baffle is in there you might want to pull it out (on most header systems I've seen there is usually one screw holding the baffle in) and re-pack it with fiberglass. Your local auto parts store should be able to help you with the fiberglass. Lastly keep the revs down when leaving for work, your neighbors will thank you for it.

Well the exhaust fell off whilst riding back from work the other day. The flared rings on the end of the down pipes which but against the clamp and hold the downpipe in have coroded.

Is it me or is this a daft design??

Can these be replaced, as the downpipes are in good order.

I've bodged it at the minute with a jubilee clip, so that the clamp has got something to push against and is big enough to stop the pipe coming out. Trouble is, I can't get the pipes in square, so it's still blowing quite a bit.

if the exhaust is leaking where the pipes meet, you could have it welded or braised, that would eliminate any noise from the leak.
