650 clutch cover window

seen these things on ebay going for a bunch of money so i am trying my hand at making one. i aways liked the ducati's and honda's with the exposed clutchs, so i guess this it the next best thing for a kz. any one have/make one before. i assume it will leak a little bit just because of the slightly irregular surfaces
edit: yea i dont change my calander much. and i did the program on a two axis bridgeport mill

If you machine it with accurate equipment and use the proper seal, it should be fine. if you cant get it to work, I know of a company that can make one for you, they do points covers too, pretty cool stuff, Im thinking of getting some stuff from them in the future.

I would think you can get it to seal. Seems like maybe I saw one with an LED light in it. You could even etch it like I have seen them etch windows on the side of pc cases. Maybe etch KZRider.com on it !

Erm..do you not have a wet clutch in there? Wouldn't that just dirty up the window, and make it so you have a nice (hopefully) amber window eventually?

..or is it a dry clutch?

that is cool !!

might try a layer of rubber to seal around the edge.
or "O"-Ring the case around the window.

I have a extra cover for you to do -- if you get a good seal. MY GS would look good with one too.

No direct experience with such animals, but a few ideas:

Not sure about clearance issues, but might the glass *look* better if it were mounted to the inside of the case?

Since you've got access to the Bridgeport, might be a worthy idea to hunt up a good quality O-ring (as mentioned elsewhere) of the appropriate size and machine a groove in the case between the opening and the mount screws to form a seat/seal. That'd go a long ways towards preventing that *drippy* issue.

Might also be an idea to fab up an aluminum ring to match the mount circumference and holes - it'll distribute the stress placed on the view plate when torquing down the bolts and aid any seal arrangement you come up with.

It'll certainly give you incentive to change your oil regularly - black goo getting slung all over the porthole will definitely get noticed at bike nights... ;)

Best of luck - an interesting idea :)

FWIW: Klasmo GMBh makes these too... and they don't bolt their panels in.

You have to consider that the pressure exerted will be pushing OUT on the window... a window on the outside is a recipe for leakage.

Klasmos are inside... and they are retained by some form of adhesive. ;)

Might be worth toying around with masking the appropriate lip area of the transparency and bead blasting, doing likewise with the inner edge of the cover and JB Weld-ing the porthole into place.

Did a shade-tree repair to a guy's radiator with the stuff (JB) one time - and 3 years on, it's *still* holding - so temperature issues shouldn't be a problem, and stressing the transparency by torque differential on bolts/vibration is minimized as well.

Good stuff from CC. ;)
