As I posted before, I recently got a motorcycle and I'm lookin for any kind of tips y'all can give me, as I live in a town where I see bikers mowed down constantly, even while I bicycle around I get hit sometimes.
- Thanks for any advice y'all give me, no matter how trivial or basic

When there's another vehicle near you, be ready for them to do what you don't expect...

Yes
sign up for a new rider safety course. ASAP.

They usually happen over a weekend Saturday and Sunday. A mix of classroom instruction and outdoor on bikes in a parking lot. As someone who returned to motorcycles after 20 years and did the course it was invaluable.

You local DMV may have info.

It's also a 2 day course and there's only 5 hours of "Instruction" from an online course, that feels too short yes?

I've been riding for almost 50 years and wearing high viz color makes a difference. When I was young I usually wore dark clothes, often black. Once middle aged I starting wearing high viz colors on my chest and helmet. It definitely makes a difference. It has greatly reduced the people turning left in front of me. It has NOT eliminated it, but an 8X or better improvement in that regard as well as lane changes on top of me. This in a world were drivers are more distracted than ever. It doesn't have to be expensive by buying new gear. Put flare tape on your helmet and get a high viz vest to wear over your regular gear. Have fun and welcome to riding.

My advice is take the course, it will be money well spent, you can avoid some bad habits, and boost your confidence level.  The better rider you are the more you'll enjoy motorcycles.

Once you have completed the introductory course and are becoming comfortable with what you learned there, take the advanced course. Once you are comfortable with those new skills, find a track school that focuses on street riding skills. Et cetera.
Among the advantages of spending time and money this way are 1. You will learn the best riding habits from people who know more than you and who are trained to reach those skills; 2. Learning the skills in a parking lot or on a race track allows you to focus on the new skills without having to dedicate brain power to anticipating idiot drivers, random oil slicks, distracted pedestrians, and such.

Keep the shiny side up and assume that every other driver and pedestrian is actively trying to kill you.

P.S. One great advantage you have are your dirt riding skills. For example, learning how to successfully deal with sudden changes in traction is much less painful and expensive in the dirt than on the street.
As much as I dislike having government stick its nose into every aspect of our lives, I think a requirement that new riders become proficient in motocross, trials or some other form of off-road riding before being allowed to apply for a street license, would save a bunch of lives and mangled limbs.

Not to derail this thread, but safety would be immensely improved if drivers would PUT DOWN THE CELL PHONE while driving !
Yes, every driver on the road is trying to kill us.

Totally agree, I got rear ended whilst stationary in traffic (in my Ute) by a guy who dropped his phone, and travelling at 60ks. Unluckily for him it was outside a police station and they came out after hearing the crash.
When out on the bike you should always ride defensively, ride to the right side of centre which will avoid the oil drips from cars, especially in the rain.
There are many rider courses out there which will help improve your skills from really basic through to advanced training.
Rich.
