Z1 (and others) Frame / engine numbers
22 Jan 2025 16:30
Greetings One and all, after being AWOL on this forum for over a decade I recently had a reason to return to help someone out. It also inclined me to spend a few hours on my database (That I have been compiling now for 40 Years) to research some early history of the Z1's, when I put in a certain number that I was looking for I was intrigued to see that Z1Enterprises has (had?) a question and answer service where they would tell you if your Frame and engine number combination was correct, I opened the Q & A page with interest.
Holy CR@P, I have never, ever in my life read such bad information, having spent the last 3 decades supplying the British registration service with information, I have a bit of a clue of what I am talking about, I am in total shock!
WHO on earth answered the questions for them ? Almost EVERY answer on the 80 questions was wrong! Not only was it wrong but it was must have been replied to by a 14 year old kid that was clearly dyslexic and couldn't even read the "Kawasaki Recognition manual" I will attach just One page of MANY that were simply out and out WRONG! I just shake my head in disbelief that SO many people were given completely the wrong answer that clearly devalued their bike.
I don't want to be swamped with questions, but IF you have a question about your engine and frame numbers on your 1966 - 1980 Kawasaki give me a shout and I will give you accurate answers!

That doesn't surprise me Rick. Z1Enterprises isn't the same ole place it used to be. Back when Jeff Saunders still had it and when you could still call them on the phone, things have changed dramatically. Jeff while still selling aftermarket stuff had a real interest in fit/function of everything he sold. Think he fit everything he sold before peddling it on his site. Who knows now who fields these inquiries? Seems to be now just a mega warehouse of mixed models.

I agree with the earlier posts...Z1E ain't what it used to be. They are still fine for shipping in a reasonable time frame but they have a much more limited inventory than with the previous owner (Jeff Saunders). I do miss Jeff's personalized touch.

Yes, I knew Jeff for a few years before he sold up in a somewhat acrimonious deal. I am simply astounded at some of the answers given though, several guys with correct 1972 & 1973 Z1 numbers were told by these "experts" that they have 1975 Z1's!

I do not currently have a frame or engine number I want info on, but am interested in learning more about your data set. In the past I created a table of frame and engine numbers for the (K)Z650s from info I could find and make some sense of. Never claimed it was/is correct. You say you can provide info on machines other than the Z1s. Do you have info on the 650s? Again not a single machine info but the start and end numbers for them?
I have attached said table, what can you tell me about and if anywhere near correct?

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to ask the question and even bigger thanks for making the effort to make the database!
The Z650 has never been in any serious focus for me, I am just cleaning up the database to answer your question
What has struck me instantly (and these numbers have been on my database for 20 Years) is that the Nebraska bikes appear to have been Imported into the U.K.! I never realised that!
This is going to have to be a work in progress for a few days
Oh, meanwhile here is a photo of my British Imported, Japanese Z650B1

In the Filebase here at KZR is a document with engine and frame numbers for a bunch of models. Actually, all of the models for which I could find information that I believed reliable. I'd love to take a look at your database to see if any adjustments need to be made, or if you feel like diving in yourself, please feel welcome to.

Rick i have a crazy question! Knowing that You too do crazy crap like me nobody else considers. Can You make main harness identification tags? Ya know what i'm talking about, those white strips with font of identification of purpose, taped into the, well taped up section just south, towards rear. I know..nutty but who better to ask then a fellow nut, ha. I Never buy aftermarket crap, i redo the original harness's.

Hi!
Sadly not, I don't even know what type of plastic that is, there would be a great many tags to make and I am over run already, Sorry!
