Anyone knows the range of frame and engine VINs for a 1978 Z1R?

I could buy one but want to be sure it is not a standard bike "converted" into a Z1R.

Fort both the frame and engine number, it should start with KZT00D.

The engine number almost never matches the frame number, but they should be near each other, within about 100.

It's not super easy to fake a Z1R, as the frame is different, especially where the tail and seat mount. Although I have seen many that no longer have the original engine.

The Z1R ( as well as MK2 ) also has double skinned front down tubes from just under the headstock to above the front engine mounts.

I heard about a local guy that possibly have a 1978. I'm trying to call him since a few days but no success yet.

BTW, what is the usual value (cost) today for a 1978. I understand it depends of the condition but for a good exemple, what is the range?
And despite that I am not looking for an investment (bikes are a passion) does a Z1-R keeps its value over the years?

For the 1977-1980 KZ1000 range, the Z1R is definitely more collectable than the early standard or the LTD models. The 79-80 MK2 is on par with the Z1R I think, and for some may be more desirable based on taste (the Z1R styling is a bit much for some).

The price range for a Z1R is pretty wide. 20 years ago when I bought mine a decent bike could be had for $2500, and a nice clean one maybe $5000.

Recently a clean and decent running bike could probably easily get $8000. A nice complete one maybe $12,000. I've seen them sell for as much as $23,000.

This piece of junk sold for $6800 on Ebay in July. I have no idea why someone bid it up so high, but that was definitely a mistake.


This one sold for $13,250 also in July.

I missed out on one posted on Facebook marketplace that’s was completely disassembled buy looked 99% complete for $650.00. Needless to say it was a frenzy of messages and I wasn’t the first one to message and someone else got the deal of the year.

Just saying they are still out there for decent pricing. You just have to be on the look 24 hours a day to snag the good deals.
