Can anyone ID this tank? was created by Andy FitzGibbon
I'm new to KZs, so this may be an elementary question. I've done a lot of Google image searching, but haven't yet found an exact match.
The bike in the photos is a KZ440, but the tank doesn't look like a KZ440 tank to me. Anyone recognize it? Thanks.

I did more image searching, and it looks like maybe it's a late KZ400 tank. Only found it on images of 1982 bikes, so maybe small production.

Is that a coffin tank with kind of a raised ridge on top? If so, then it isn't a 750E tank.

I don't think the U.S. got that Kz400 model. Are you in Europe?

No, I'm in the US. The bike isn't mine, but was for sale in the US. I saved the photos off of Craigslist.

I agree, the mystery tank does look to be from that z400 model you found, but how it got to the U.S. is a guess. The U.S. Usually got models called "kz" but Europe got the same ones called "z". Maybe that same tank was used on a U.S. Kz model but I've never seen one in person that I can recall. I dont think we got any kz400 model in 1982. By then it was all 440 in the u.s.

Interesting. Thanks for the comments. The tank appears to be pretty similar to a US-spec KZ400 tank, with the big difference being that it has a fuel door instead of the oblong swinging cap.

After doing more searching, it looks like the bike I posted photos of started life as a 1982 KZ440G. Looks like it was a one-year-only model in the US, which is why the tank is unusual. Here's one, with the tank partially obscured by a Windjammer fairing...

Nice job finding that. That is a rare bike. I've only seen the Ltd style as belt drive. I'll have to keep my eyes open for that.
I'll repost the photos here. 1982 Kz440G.
