I live in Illinois and I called the DMV earlier today and they wouldn't even talk about registering my motorcycle. What happened is the owner I bought it from, which I've known over 10 years, thought he had the title for it, so I bought it and fell in love with it. It turns out he lost it in a house fire he had 2 years back. So, like I said I called the DMV and they wouldn't even consider talking to me about and I refuse to just let her sit at home. So, I figured my other options would be go to a different DMV or try the Vermont option. Just wanted to know if someone else has done it and lives in Illinois and if they had any issues and is it completely legal.

The previous owner should be able to request a replacement title. Then sign it over to you and you transfer it into your name. Another option is a bill of sale from the P.O. Also I have acquired titles for bikes by getting a surety bond. They cost around $100 and your insurance company can do it for you.

I did VT registration. You need a bill of sale and insurance. The registration, which doubles as a transfer of ownership, will come in the mail first, then your plate a few days later.

Illinois dmv should get you a title with a BOS signed by you and the previous owner on record. Get it notorized.

Theres also companies that will get titles like Moto Recycle.

We did the VT registration process successfully that resulted in us receiving a KY title for an un-restored-original barn find '73 Z1 that was last registered in WA state, circa 1986. Our project to bring this '73 Z1 back to life is detailed elsewhere here on KZR in the Projects sub-forum under the title 'The Wounded Z'.

Mr. Bob Conger runs a motorcycle salvage & export operation linked to below.

A bike to be exported must have a title. Bob has necessarily become proficient with the VT registration process because he sees so many title-less bikes that are in demand elsewhere in the world.

Bob's assistance was invaluable for us in handling the details necessary to obtain a new KY title to The Wounded Z. He's a regular at Mid-Ohio, a stand-up family man, Navy Vet and all around good man to know.

Considering the return on investment (a good title) the cost of Bob's assistance is minimal.

Nebraska is a little snotty about titles for orphan motorcycles, I have a 1966 W1 that I built out of about three parts bikes I would like to obtain a title for. Thanks for providing the link, looks like valuable information!

Hi, just did VT. for a 81 650csr, cost a little over $100, you will need a letter from local law enforcement on their letterhead, that they looked at and verified the vin, have run a NCIC check (not stolen) get a copy and send also, a notarized bill of sale from PO, completed VT reg app forms, can be filled out and printed from their website as a PDF, you will print 2 copies send both in ,take pictures of bike and the vin sticker and stamping, look up the NADA value, (for sales tax) make the value a bit higher (they get more tax), write a check for the tax and reg fee, and mail in, get it insured when you send in the paperwork, you can check your bank online to follow the check, received plate about 3 weeks later and reg a week after that, or if ILL. is like NY you can get a replacement title online, it has to be sent to the listed owners address, if he has moved maybe he can help you and provide proof of his new address (license), Did this with a Jeep a few years back, paid the fee and picked up at owners house, you don,t need him to apply for this good luck
Z1A AND 81 650

As Mikaw mentioned simply have the previous owner request a replacement title. Assuming he actually owned the bike and did not steal it this is not a big deal. Ed

Omaha checking in. Did VT title a few years back. Follow the steps posted several places online to get your bike VT legal. Once you have the VT info your state should register, assuming your state has similar rules regarding antique vehicles.

Krazee, if you're in the business of helping someone with their first bike with some electrical issues send me a private message. I somehow turned a problem with a constant on starter into a problem where I blow the fuse every time I turn the kill switch to run.

For what it’s worth, Vermont has temporarily suspended the requirement to send in a VIN verification form due to Covid-19. I sent in my paperwork yesterday (from Ohio) — fingers crossed.

I didn’t realize that Vermont title was a process, thank you for another learning experience. Still I think the best option for the OP is to go with the previous owner to the dmv and apply for a replacement title. It can usually be done in one trip if the seller and buyer go together. Thanks

Unfortunately that’s a dead end in several states, including Ohio. It would be nice if they could create some sort of bonded title process but I doubt it’s on any politicians radar. Although they did changes the rules for abandoned boats a couple of years ago...
