Decelerator Cable Install was created by kz550ohno
Hey all.
My decelerator cable recently broke at the end of the head. I need to install a new one but I don't see an easy way to do so. The right handlebar control case doesn't come apart from my understanding so I don't see any other way of reinstalling the throttle cable other than drilling a hole in the cable head and resoldering the cable on. If anyone has other suggestions please let me know!
Thanks!

I don't know which motorcycle you have, but I would bet real money that the housing has a pair of screws either on the bottom or the front, that hold the two halves together. Do you have a factory service manual?

What 550 is it? I bet every KZ control housing can be separated by removing 2 screws on the underside as noted by TexasKZ. The RH handlebar control kind of encases the end of the throttle where the cables engage it.

You can download one of the various manuals by following the links in my signature. Or better yet, download all of them.

I have a kz550 LTD.
I must have not been looking close enough... Only thing is I couldn't find any documentation on it in any of the owner manuals.
I'll dig around some more and probably order a new cable today.

Inspect the other cable before ordering, in case it's starting to fray or something. I lubricate the inner cables with Liquid wrench chain & cable lube, and use Permatex ultra disk brake caliper grease on the cable ends.
Kind of related. If you ever start poking around the Fr brake master cylinder piston, there's a tab on the underside of the master cylinder that needs to be depressed in order to remove the piston assy. The tab is usually recessed into a rectangular hole on the underside of the master cylinder & kind of hard to see. If not careful, the tab & liner can get damaged. The liner is a plastic piece w tabs.

You did not mention the year, though they are all likely to be similar. Here is an exploded view of the 1980 550 LTD controls.

As Martin suggested, I would replace both cables at the same time, as they are likely the same age.
