Anyone know what a decent price would be for a tank? I can fix dents, but would prefer not much interior rust. There on eBay for roughly 200.00. Maybe someone here had one? Thank you, have a great day.

Don't think there was a 1980 GPz550. First year was 1981, in the USA anyway. Regardless, those tanks are hard to find and not cheap. If you find a good one for $200 that would be a pretty fair price. One other option you may want to consider is picking up a KZ550 tank instead, assuming this tank is going on a cafe project or something to this effect. The KZ tank is the same basic shape and may even be identical other than paint. Hopefully one of the more experienced folks here can confirm or correct me on this detail...

I'm sure I messed up the year! I was thinking a kz would be similar, but I was hoping someone smarter than me would chime in. Yes it's a project...i like the squarish shape and size of the fox, shooting for similar. Thanks for your reply!

As mentioned, the GPz550 was first offered in 1981 as the KZ550D1.
I actually have a couple of spare '81 GPz550 gas tanks. They need some work, but luckily you mentioned that you can fix dents. I'll check the insides but don't expect to find any real rust.
Give me a day or three and I can get some pictures up here if you're interested.

Just for reference, the Kz550 standard tanks and the 81 Gpz550 tanks look almost identical, but there are some hidden differences which can be an issue if you are doing any customizing.
The biggest difference is the early tanks are shaped differently underneath. The early tanks hug the coils and frame closer. The later tanks, and the 81 Gpz550 tank have more clearance around the coils. For totally stock bikes the tanks should be direct bolt-on swaps, but if you have larger coils or other custom gadgetry under the tank it could be an issue.
I believe the difference was for heat or water related issues, to get more air flow around the coils so they could cool/dry better.
I think this also means the earlier tanks could hold a bit more gasoline.
The other major difference is that the Gpz tank has a fuel gauge sending unit which goes through a rather large port in the bottom of the tank. This is handy for getting out more rust or lost keys from within the tank.

No worries!
I started a new topic in the for sale section: the subject is "Three tanks: KZ440, KZ550, '81 GPz550". The pics are in there.
