How much and when? was created by Togoster
I've bought 3 new motorcycles over the years and the rest where preowned.

My first new bike was a 1976 kz400 i think ran 1400, second was my 1978 KZ650 Custom at around $2400 and last my 1980 R100 BMW at around 5300.

These old Kaws really hold their own in terms of resale imo.

Especially, when maintained.

Would appreciate hearing other experiences.

Just a few of the too many:

In 1984 I bought my first 79 CBX, 1200 miles, for $1700. Previous owner died crashing it into a brick wall at 60 mph....no helmet, messy...
'86 - my 81 CBX for $500 - really rough shape, guy was originally asking $2500, mine was the best offer....spent $8000 restoring and customizing it.
Between 86 to 98, I bought another 20 CBX's from $350 to $1500 each. I sold or parted most of them out, but kept my original two above and still have both.
2010 - bought a 7000 mile mint R1 for $5800. Used for one 8000 mile tour, then gave it to my 12 year old son (for later)
2011 - my 25000 mile 83 GPz1100, good condition - $1200
2012 - bought an engine, from a 1981 KZ1000J, for $200. Approx. $9000 later, now 1400 cc monster motor capable of 200 HP. Will someday be put into a Bimota KB3 inspired home built sport bike - need to build the right bike around the mighty engine....
2012 - 81 KZ1000CSR, 35000 miles a.k.a. "Beater 1" - $450. Ran, needed only mirrors, shocks and a new battery to ride.
2012 - 81 KZ1000LTD, 20000 miles, basket case, missing head, cylinder, etc. $250. "Beater 2" undergoing transformation to street sleeper / part time drag bike built for under $2500 from mostly used parts
2014 - 3 XS650 Yamaha basket cases, $50. One engine runs...sort of.
2015 - 2 79 CBX basket cases from various local sellers - can make at least one bike out of the two - all for $500.
2015 - bought another KZ1000 engine, basket case from a 82 LTD for $400. Many racing parts came with it - cams, pistons, ported head, undercut transmission, clutch, ignition, air shifter, chassis, etc. Re - engine re-built back to stock to replace the tired engine in the CSR this year. Race parts saved and mostly going into "Beater 2"'s engine and chassis.
2016 - 83 GPz1100, 17000 miles, $1500. Bought for parts only - runs and has working fuel injection, but in horrible condition otherwise.
2016 - another 04 R1 - 35000 miles, insurance write off, $2200. Needs only cosmetics, and I had most of the parts needed already, so easy fix.
2017 - a 83 GS1100ES in rough condition. Free, sort of. Also included were a 83 Katana 750 and an engine from a 96 GSXR1100W.
2017 - another 2 CBX basket case engines, enough stuff for building one complete engine, traded a so-so 79 CBX tank plus $400 cash for them....

2-04 R1, 81 CSR1000, 81 LTD1000, 2-83 GPz1100, 3-79CBX, 81 CBX, 3-XS650, 84 Venture, +parts

One more, might make some cry....

1983, I recieved the following:

3 - H1's, two that had drum brakes, 1 H2, And, a 72 iron head sportster, a Triumph 500 twin, and an RD350. All were basket cases missing numerous parts (the Harley was the most complete, the Triumph was mostly incomplete), and the Kawaski's consisted of one slick-shod drag bike (with a blown up 500 engine in it) and the rest were probably intended donor parts for it.

I got all of it for cleaning out the old guy's garage (the bikes were his estranged son's), plus I gave him $20 drinkin' money.

Now the sad part - I sold only the Harley, some of the dragster's chassis parts, and the rest eventually went to the garbage dump when my parents divorced when I was 17, and I moved away from home and had no place to store that stuff any longer.....

Added - some of the engine mounting and other larger bolts were still in my parts box years later - when I used them to make sandblaster nozzles on the lathe at work....

2-04 R1, 81 CSR1000, 81 LTD1000, 2-83 GPz1100, 3-79CBX, 81 CBX, 3-XS650, 84 Venture, +parts

Woah, woah, woah. The CBX owner crashed that bike into a brick wall at 60 mph (no helmet) and it was still worth $1700?

The larger issue is whether or not the did it on purpose.

Did the bike get a second life?

Haha, blast from the past. I remember riding one of those of those CBX Hondas, me and this guy Nick traded off with him riding my R100 BMW and I remember thinking I could play a game of pool on the gas tank.
