1982 Kawasaki KZ1000
'82 KZ1000 Information was created by clagrow68
I just picked up a 1982 KZ1000. I'm curious as to why when I try to lookup any info on it, I never see a plain KZ1000 as a trim option. I only see a J, R and P options. I understand what those designations mean but, I never see anything (even parts) listed for a plain KZ1000. Any ideas as to why? Thanks.

Every Kawasaki bike had some sort of code associated with the model. In other words, there was no "plane KZ1000".

That's what I thought too but the title doesn't show a sub model and when I search the VIN online it doesn't show any sub model designation either.

If thats it in your profile picture,it looks like an LTD or a CSR.

That is indeed it. Anything to look for that would give me a definitive answer as to which it is?

After some more digging around...I found my answer. It has the cast wheels and electric gauges as well as a K1 in the VIN...so this all leads me to believe it is an LTD. I also ran into a thread that one user claimed the CSR stood for Chrome Spoked Rims.

The KZ1000-K1 was a 1981 model; the KZ1000-K2 was the 1982 model. The link below takes you to parts diagrams for each which may be helpful. Ed

As far as I understand the LTD and CSR are the same except for the wheels and the clocks.(Though the CSR goes by an M1 and M2 designation.) I have a CSR (M1 I think) that came with LTD wheels which confused things even more!
There are many ideas on what CSR stands for,I dont think anyone knows for sure. I dont believe 'Chrome spoked rims' but you never know. An abbreviation of 'Cruiser' seems more likley to me.

Nope. As far as I know, CSR doesn't mean anything & I've never seen definitive proof otherwise.
Kawasaki used the word cruiser in some of their csr ads/brochures, but there's no proof csr means that either.
My guess, and this is just a guess, is that Kawasaki got the marketing term from Matchless which sold a G12 CSR (650cc).
Model designation. To see what Kawasaki motorcycles were available for any particular year, go to Partzilla & choose a year. The model designations are listed. Standard models typically don't have a marketing badge & are just listed as KZ750-E2 or KZ1000-J1 etc.
