Howdy all.
I've been a member here since I bought my Z1 a few years ago and appreciate having somewhere to find my questions already answered.

I bought the bike from the original owner who had already done a significant number of period modifications and have tried to stay true to what you'd see on a 70's street racer. Everything I've done so far can be reversed to stock.

I'm trying to decide what the next step is in upgrading my Z1.
Currently it's on a relatively fresh 1st-over bore with new top end.

I've narrowed my options as far as what is next to two main ones:
-replace progressive springs with Race-Tech setup (springs + emulators) as well as upgrade the rear shocks (S&W to ohlins?)
-port and polished head: If I were to do this I would find a second head to do all the work to so that I could keep the current one as it is

Z1 heads are getting awfully expensive so were I to go that route I'd opt for modifying a KZ1000 piece. Anyone have any suggestions?

Eventually I'd like to find a second frame that I can brace.

here's some pictures so you can see what's been done already:

The fairing is an original rickman that came with brackets for a Z1 frame. They pop up on ebay occasionally.

The rear-sets are tarozzi

As a rider, I'd go for the suspension upgrades. They will make a much bigger impact than a ported head, but they will also magnify the wibbly-wobbly nature of the frame. Still, in the corner is where you will surprise your mates.

That is one sweet looking ride there! I agree with getting the suspension and brakes settled first, power last. If the bike won't stop or handle, all the power goes to an ill handling, non stopping bike.

I don't have a plan and I'm sticken' to it! '77 KZ 650 / 750 GPz custom project in progress

Very nice bike !!!!!!!
Love the fairing too . I want one !!!! :P
Shocks make sense . Ohlins or give Nils at Restocycle a call .
His ad appears at the top of each page.
He can make shocks up to fit your needs and they will look period correct

Funny story about the fairing...
I was deployed to afghanistan at the time and saw that there was both a full rickman fairing (with Z1 brackets) as well as the 1/2 rickman fairing (with Z1 brackets). Since I couldn't reliably get to a computer, I put a bid on both in hopes that I'd win one... well go figure I won both. Thankfully I have friends who are willing to store large boxes for me.

Thanks for the tip on the Ohlins.

On a side note, for those who've done emulator cartridges on their Z1's, these are the proper directions for machining correct?:

I may buy a second set of damping rods so I can just swap them over.
