My bike is having an identity crisis... was created by newtoclassics
Help!
I am the latest lucky owner of this true barn find. I am reasonably sure of next-to-nothing with this lady. I'm getting the distinct feeling that she may have multiple-personalities.
Frame is likely a 74, of that I'm reasonably sure, but the engine...? Some things point to the heart of a 78...6-speed transmission (or at least the cover indicates this...)
Please give me some of your ideas for this.

cyclechaos.com or zedder.com have engine & frame number info for a number of Kawasaki models.
At zedder if your bike isn't listed on the site, then you'd have to buy the software.
edit: see replies below. the early 400s had a 5-spd transmission.

That looks like a KZ440 engine. Kawasaki began making them for the 1980 model year and made them through 1983. If the frame is from 1974 it probably is from a KZ400. That was the first KZ400 model year. Both the KZ400 and KZ440 came with 6-speed transmissions. The link below will take you to a site with tons of info about the KZ400 and KZ440. Ed

The head and carbs show the engine to be a later 400, or a 440, like Ed said.
The front disk makes the frame a D model.
The rear fender makes it '74-'77.
