1977 KZ400 Model??/Exhaust was created by Konzie03
Is there an easy way to figure out which model KZ400 I have? I've tried doing a little research but couldn't really find much. It has a 2-1 exhaust off the left side. Most of the KZ400s I've seen from 1977 had the exhaust off the right side or 2-2 exhaust. I'm wondering if this is aftermarket or did some of them come with 2-1 exhaust. I'd like to go to 2-2 exhaust. The current exhaust is pretty dinky and could use an upgrade. I'd post pics of the other side but the bike is currently in the shop getting new tires & a new clutch cable installed. Anyone have any recommendations for aftermarket exhaust and where I could get new header pipes since I'd be going from 2-2 to 2-1?

What is the frame number; it will be stamped into the steering neck. That can then be used to identify the exact year/model. Ed

If needed, a KZ440 Factory Shop Manual (FSM) may be downloaded for free at www.kz400.com

Go to www.kz400.com

On the left-hand side of the page, scroll down to and click on Manual

On the right-hand side, scroll down to where you see

KZ440 Workshop Manual

A workshop manual for the following 440 models can be downloaded from here or here.

Click on the 2nd "here" (the 1st "here" produces an error message).

Takes a few moments to download the FSM.

Good Fortune! :)

EDIT -- Oops. Checking for KZ400 FSM.
I don't see a single click to download a KZ400 service manual.
Would suggest -- Keep scrolling and poking around through the Contents pages and multiple individual thumbnail pages from the service manuals, which can be clicked to enlarge for reading on-screen.

I don't think any of the KZ400s came with a 2 into 1. You probably have a cheap Mac replacement.
eBay would be your best bet for a used 2 into 2 exhaust. Mine has the stock headers with the cans cut off (by the PO) and MAC replacement mufflers. Works and looks OK.

Info on www.kz400.com includes the following KZ400 models as having stock 2>1 exhaust systems:

1976 KZ400-S2
1977 KZ400-S3
1978 KZ400-C1 Special

I don't know and haven't researched which if any KZ440 models may have had stock 4>1 exhaust systems.

Good Fortune! :)

Your exhaust definitely is not stock. The stock 2 into 1 system has the muffler on the right side as shown below. Ed

Been interesting to realize most single muffler exhaust systems, especially aftermarket offerings, have exited on the bike's right hand side.

One notable exception was Denco, and I'm uncertain about Bassani and other likely now obsolescent brands.

Am guessing right hand exit is desirable to avoid the chain mess which quickly accumulates on left-side versions.

Good Fortune! :)

Thanks for all the responses. Once I finally get it back from the shop (hopefully this weekend) I'll check out the frame number and hopefully figure out what model it is. Thanks again, very helpful info!
