I think of a big KZ as a "muscle bike" and a streetfighter is more stripped down with upright riding position and no body work. When non-riders ask about my KZ1000 I tell them it's like the 60's muscle car of the motorcycle world.

Here's my contribution to this thread. It took me around 2 years to finish everything up on the fighter build part, just chipping away at it whenever I could. She started out as a '78 C2 KZ 650 that needed lots of engine work and some paint to bring it back to life. I started out on the engine, and put a Wiseco 720 big bore kit in it. Threw on a 4-1 exhaust from a 2002 Kawi Z750, and a stage 3 Dyna jet carb kit with pods. Repainted everything, and rode it for a season. Decided that the suspension and brakes needed work, so apart she came. The front end is off a 2001 Buell Lightning X1. We had to lathe/cut/weld the steering stem down to fit the KZ steering tube. The rear end is off a '99 Ninja 600 with the wheel from a '99 Ninja 900. With the suspension swap, the bike is dropped 3.5 inches and stretched 3 inches. I wanted to keep everything looking as stock as possible, so this took some good head scratching and planning out. We made up a custom rear shock mount that allowed me to leave the battery box in it's location. Foot rests are off a '99 Ninja 750. And the speedo is an Acewell unit, nice and compact. She still needs a little work, but I rode her all last season, and what a difference everything made. She weighs about 30lbs less with all the aluminum parts on it now, and handles like a dream. My next step is to make up a custom exhaust as this one drags on the ground in some corners and bumps. I also need to shorten up the headlight ears a bit.
But this is my take on a streetfighter. I tried to leave as much of the KZ look as I could, while adding as much new gear as I could.

Maybe run the brake cable behind the frame?

Strum- I also have a 7" windscreen for it that hugs the headlight and will help to split some wind up front. But that's the plan- shorten the ears, get the windscreen on, and try to build up a nice custom exhaust for it. Thanks for the kind words, it's nice to know that there's others out there that appreciate a little custom work ;)

Steve- the rear cable? I've though about it, but I don't know if it would cause the side cover to pop off when the swingarm runs through it's motion path. I might be able to snake it around there a bit to tuck it out of the way. I've also thought about a new one with different banjo ends to try and get it to lay flat along the swingarm to tuck it out of the way. The other thing about going behind the frame is that I have a wheel hugger to go on, so I don't know if that would interfere either. Thanks for the kind words :)

Not to criticise your build, its a fine looking bike and youve obiously put a lot of thought into it but the cable is maybe too long. Shorten it up,better angled banjos and maybe a hose clamp o rtwo fixing it to the swing arm.

Edit; Sorry,I meant hose

Is that a cable or a hose? Been thinking about a cable for my drum. Welding up my new swing arm so the rod could be an issue. If it cable, pics of how you did it? I too may go with a much larger tire.

Davido- any criticism is good criticism in my books. I've thought of that- switching them up to hide it better. Worth a shot for sure.
