Has anyone here ever transferred a title with the state of Maine. This guy has a Kawasaki kz 1000 without a title (lost), he said they will give a verification letter and a notarized bill of sale and a copy of his owners card and I should be able to get a title in PA for this bike being it is from 1980! Is this true or is this bullshit. How much would it cost if you would know? THanks,Lee

Why don't you contact your DMV, & ask if it can be done in your state like that?

Have you ever tried to contact the dmv before! I think it would be quicker to eat a jar of molasses. I did try though and try I did.....
but couldn't get through. I did contact two notary services and they both said the samething, notarized bill of sale , that letter of confirmation(notarized) , copy of his registration and that should be enough to get it titled in PA. So they say! its not their money and time going to get the bike and the gamble that my piss poor state of PA is going to except that. There is no guarantee better than having a title in the first place. I just was wondering if anyone has gone through this process before in their state. Thanks,Lee

Did it in IN, the truth is, going down to the DMV and asking a clerk in person is definitely worth the 20-30 minutes to get an answer, and I'd bet it matches the answer the website gives you too

Instead of eating a jar of molasses did you GO to the DMV in person, instead of contacting the DMV thru the interntet ?

I knew I recognized the username before, well over a year ago you posted asking about a mkii frame because it was basically impossible to get a title? Uet you are here again, over a year later without actually asking a clerk at the desk? I'd be certain that they also have a pdf on the site about "lost/no title" vehicle titling.

I'm positive it is possible to do

Here is something you may try. Sorry a got lazy and pasted this form another forum on visit.
I went the VT route and did not need a notarized bill of sale. In my case, I bought the bike in Florida, so I took with me a Florida bill of sale which I downloaded form the FL DMV. I also downloaded an odometer/VIN verification form form the FL DMV. After picking up the bike I had a local Sheriff meet me at and he verified the VIN and odometer and signed the form I brought with me along with his information. One thing to keep in mind, VT will not issue a title for a bike older than 15 years old. Only are registration. I don't think they titled bikes back then. So as long as the bike is older than 15 years old it should be no problem. Here how it works. I used this form:
DMV-DB119
You don't have to be a resident of VT and don't have to be in the state to apply. VT will accept your bill of sale and the the odometer/ VIN verification by a certified agency in your state (in FL, state or county law enforcement officer is authorized to do the check). You will be charged 6% of the sale price. But you will at minimum, be assessed on a $500.00 sale price even if you paid less for the bike. I paid $250.00 for my bike but was still assessed at 6% of 500.00 ($30.00). Then it will cost you the additional $44.00 for the registration and plates which is good for one year. You can use that for a year and transfer the registration to get a title in your state anytime before they expire. In my case I went and paid FL to get a FL title using the VT registration as proof of ownership. Good luck

I had asked if anyone had a mk2 frame, but I don't believe I asked about titles. Must have been someone else.

Well I could, but the dmv in my state is a great distance away and you have to go during the week(which I work) and then its leaps and bounds once in the building to accomplish you mission.

:) My dmv is a great trip away from me or I would. I'm going to try again, but they put you through so many numbers and robots and then a busy signal.

No help for you here, but even if you go to DMV, get a clerk, ask them what is involved, then proceed, the chances of getting the same clerk when you go back with all the paperwork is slim and the next clerk will have an entire different idea of what you need. Around here the clerks get bonus pay for every person they can successfully deny registration.
I swear every time I go there I just fell like beating the living crap out of someone.
If you get the normal clerk that refuses to do anything and knows nothing, sometimes you can get lucky and talk to a supervisor, but they get real pissed off if you try to do that usually.
Buddy of mine has been trying to register an old Harley since first of summer. Last I heard they needed info on where the transmission was manfactured before they will issue the title. He has to get paperwork and be all legal showing the transmission is USA built. Oh my gosh.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I swear the negativity here is crazy. our BMV (we for some odd reason don't have a D) is 45 minutes away, so there ya go travel is a fact if you live rural. If you cannot get an answer online, and don't have any luck wading through the phone BS take a drive and go ask; if you don't believe you are going to get a real answer, get a supervisor.

I can go take a 45 minute drive, hand any of the ladies behind the counter my packet of info (police check, bill of sale, etc) pay my $40 fee, walk out with an application for lost title, hit up a local restaurant (the kids love the all you can eat joint in "the big city") and be outta there happy in a few hours.

If you can buy a decent bike for a good price, why are you letting a piece of paper stop ya? Especially if you are looking at a z1r/mkii like your thread title implies? And you were pointed out a mkii on eBay that had no title "no title, only worth parts" and were nudged to check out your state's titling laws by a member or two.
