Hi All,

I've had a KZ200 for I think about 3 years now and I worked on it once in a while. I managed to get it running but I still have the feeling I need some parts. The problem I'm facing is that I can't seem to identify the year of my motorcycle. It doesn't have a VIN number and the Brand on the tank is with capital letters "KAWASAKI". This all seems to point in the direction of an older KZ200. The only thing is that the serial number is KZ200A-046401. In my searching on the web this serial number meant the bike is build in 1982 KZ200-A5.

Can somebody enlighten me on my bike? Thanks in advance!

Greetings,

Seb

Cyclechaos.com has frame & engine number info for a number of Kawasaki motorcycles.
Also, you can poke around Zedder.com. And you can use Kawasaki.com, Partzilla & eebbaayy to compare parts & part numbers.

Well I wasn't sure if I could link to another site like cyclechaos but that is where I got most of the info from. According to cyclechaos my motorcycle is the A5 type.

1982 KZ200-A5
Four-stroke, 1 Cylinder, Single Over Head Camshaft,
5-Speed, Return Shift
Color
Fuel Tank: Luminous Passion Red, Galaxy Silver
Front Fender: Chrome plated
Engine No: KZZOOAE068501 -
Frame No: KZZ00A-045804 -
Parts Catalogue No: 99910-1731-02
Service Manual No: 99931-541-05
Owner's Manual No: 99922-1774-01
Remarks: Commuter bike. Mechanical front disc brake, rear drum brake, steering lock combined with ignition switch.

The engine however has another number. Is there a way I can lookup at what year they started with introducing VIN-numbers. That way I can establish a groundyear.

Thanks in advance and kind regards,

Seb

What's the engine number & did you check other KZ200 models to see if it jibes with another year?
Also, where are you located? Since the bike doesn't have a 17 digit vin, it probably isn't a USA model. not sure about Canada.
There are a couple of Kawasaki factory service manuals listed on eebbaayy that cover the 82 model.

Sorry for the late reply, had e busy weekend :pinch:

I have taken some photos of the bike and the corresponding numbers:

1. "VIN" number

2. Engine number kz200al081104

3. KAWASAKI on the Tank

I'm located in the Netherlands but I'm not really sure if the bike also originated from here. Unfortunately I don't have the papers with the bike.

Thanks for your help!

The identification number of a motorcycle may be referred to as chassis number or serial number or frame number or vehicle identification number aka VIN.

The engine has its own separate identification number -- a different number -- which is often referred to a engine number or engine serial number.

What's suspicious about the reported information from cyclechaos?

The VIN (frame number) almost never matches the engine number. As long as they are fairly close, you likely have a 1982 KZ200 with its original, or at least date correct, engine.
However, it looks like you engine number may be from a later year. Try putting in a 1985 KZ 200 into the database and see what engine numbers come up.

In the pic above, it looks like there is a decal on the steering head below the VIN. does it have any useful info on it?
