First tune up was created by Slopar00
Hey guys Saturday I'm going to go and work on my bike. What would you guys recommend for the first tune up I'm doing to it.

On another note I want to do pod filters and eventually some exhaust work. Where can I find a carb kit to tune the carbs

83 kz 440 bobber build. It's my 1st bike/ build I've ever done so it's coming along slow.

First thing you have to do, & most important, is to get a genuine Kawasaki service manual for your specific make & model , !!!
all the information you need will be in it, with step by step instructions , ...& then if you have any questions, you can ask for help here

As Pete said - "First thing you have to do, & most important, is to get a genuine Kawasaki service manual for your specific make & model , !!!" Do yourself a HUGE favor and follow his advice!!! The manual will tell you what all needs to be done and exactly how to do it properly. Ed

What bike is it? In some cases carb kits can be a waste of money, since you could end up paying for unneeded extra stuff.
I would keep the stock airbox installed --- some carbs are difficult to tune for individual pod filters.

Tuneup. valve clearance check. compression check. new spark plugs & plug wires. clean/check/lubricate the timing advancer. oil & oil filter. new air filter. battery check. drain & clean the fuel tank & check that the petcock screen isn't clogged. new fuel line & in-line fuel filter. carburetor synchronization. clean & lube the chain. check the brakes & tires.

+1 A carb kit has stuff you normally won't normally need. In more than 57,000 miles the only thing I've ever replaced on any of my carbs was the carb bowl gaskets. Replacing needles, jets, etc. can cause problems becasue many of the carb kits contain parts that are not precise. Those metal parts don't normally wear out, so if they're dirty just clean them. Ed

Can't agree more on using KZ carb parts.......... I bought K and L kits a while back and after compairing them I stuck with all the original......... the quality and fit just wasn't there and since I ran the smooth bores for so long the stock carbs are in really great shape. The jetting kits are different too and can give you problems.

Check back or search when you decide on the pods and header for jetting tips...... more than a few are against pods and I won't agrgue for a second ....I run em and like em but I know they don't do much at all for performance.

29MM smooth bores W/ 17.5 pilots, 0-6s and 117.5 main
16/42 gearing X ring chain and alum rear JT sprocket.

Ok so realized the bike is an 82.

After looking the bike over via the owners manual everything looked great! Bike started right up. Didn't get to changing the oil or draining the gas But next time I go I'll be taking the bike home with me and I'll be changing the oil and draining the fuel.

I'm not really looking for performance for the pods more about them being cleanable.so I'm sure I will need to tune the carbs for the pods and if I do any exhaust work

You can put a cleanable filter in the air box and may not need to mess with jetting.

Be sure to use oil that has JASO-MA marked on the container. Otherwise you may ruin your clutch. Ask here if you're not sure what I mean. Ed

I definitely would NOT recommend pods; at least not until you have ridden the bike a while with a stock air filter so you know how well it can perform and become a carb expert.. Otherwise you will spend time chasing your tail trying to make the bike run without knowing how well it should run.

You still haven't said what bike you have. You mentioned 1982, but there are MANY 1982 KZ models ranging from 250cc to 1300 cc. Whatever it is, it very likely has CV carbs which are going to make it quite challenging (if not impossible) to set up for pods. Do yourself a big favor and hold off on pods at least for now. Ed
