Welcome to the site.
If you've never ridden, any smaller bike is a good place to start. Gotta start somewhere. Make sure you take a rider course in your area.
Sorry... I have no experience with the 440, so someone else may have more input for you re: this bike.

I did have a KZ440 some years back. Didn't have it long, but I recall it had no vices. It was more of a cruiser than a highway bike. Not to say you can't tour with it, just use the back roads,

Make sure it has a complete, undamaged airbox. It or the cap are often times missing or damaged.
Replacements, new or used, are very difficult to find for the 440.
The 1980 440 may have points ignition. You could install the electronic ignition from a later model... probably easy to do.

The 440 is a good beginner bike. It has a low seat, and easy to drive. It has enough power to run on the highway, but it's not the best at that. As an in town commuter it is a great little bike. The engine is well built and has few problems. As mentioned above make sure the airbox and airfilter have not been messed with. As with any old bike make sure of the condition its in. Check the tires for weather cracking and make sure the front brake feels firm. It should start easily and need some choke to idle when its cold.
