air filter for KZ750 was created by molark5
I’m planning to buy the K&N air filter for my KZ750 Twin since it has a low price tag at 4wheelonline.com . I know it will not provide tremendous power improvement. Just curious if someone had any problems using this kind of filter. How’s the quality of k&n filter? Thanks.

I've never liked the way the gauze style of filter element retains dirt when cleaning it. Basically they want you to buy another after a few years when dirt is getting stuck, of the gauze is damaged. While using a Oiled Filter, why not oiled Foam? Thats what I prefer. Uni makes an oiled foam that fits into the factory air box, not just a universal clamp on type. Not sure what 750 you have but here is an example.

A related question. Some 750-4s came stock w a paper air filter, while others had a foam filter fitted over a cage. Which one is preferable? I've always used the paper type on my 81 650-CSR but have been thinking of getting one of those Uni filters. Thanks.

I've always read that the K&N air filter is less effective at filtering fine particles than the stock air filter. Here's some info from an ISO 5011 test regarding a comparison of car air filters. K&N uses the same media for bike filters. Interesting reading - part states:

"Comparing the AC Delco (rated the best from the test results) to the K&N: The AC Delco filter test ran for 60 minutes before reaching its max restriction while the K&N and AMSOIL filters each ran for about 24 minutes before reaching their max restriction. Another interesting bit of information is that the AC Delco accumulated 574 gms of dirt and passed only 0.4 gms. After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221 gms of dirt but passed 7.0 gms of dirt. Comparing the K&N to the AC Delco the K&N plugged up nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt. The AC Delco filter which passed the smallest amount of dirt and had the highest dirt capacity and efficiency but also had the highest relative restriction to flow. Obviously the better filtering media is also the most restrictive."

It's real simple, the better an air filter flows, the worse it filters.

I can make an air filter for you that will filter 100%, but the motor won't run because it won't get any air :P

Let me try again. Some 750-4s came stock w a paper air filter, while others came stock w a foam filter that's supposed to be oiled. Which one is preferable? Thanks.

For longevity of the motor, the paper one.
For performance, the foam one.

That's why I can't answer your question, I can only offer a choice of answers. :P

Thanks! That's kinda what I was thinking but wasn't sure if the stock foamy was much different from the Uni, but I guess they're about the same. I'll stick w paper. :)

Wow! You guys are on top of the K&N sham. Well, maybe that's a little harsh. But most people don't realize K&N's flow a lot of air because they don't filter very well. Not a fan.

BTW, I'm going to run a paper Hiflofiltero brand filter in my 750E.

The gauze and wire mesh make a good solid holder for a decent oiled foam wrap! :P
